Herbal medicine

Why herbs?

Herbs have a long history of healing agents in most cultures and traditional use often guides their applications now. Cloud9 Naturopathy selects herbs according to tradition and evidence-based research into their components and how they work. Herbs are complex, sometimes containing thousands of identified chemicals. They act subtly and gently in multiple ways, support the body to heal itself and are matched to your vitality, condition, medical history and your other medications. Multiple herbs are often supplied together – they can work synergistically to provide an effective, highly personalised treatment.

Herbs both help establish the conditions for health and remove barriers to healing. For instance, in the gut, bitter and pungent herbs can stimulate digestion, while others reduce inflammation, protect against oxidation and soothe and heal mucous membranes. Some relieve spasms and cramping, allow the release of gas, or help keep the intestinal barrier intact. The body’s normal functions include removal of metabolic waste and introduced foreign substances. The body is constantly detoxifying neutralising, processing and removing waste through the liver, bile and faeces; the kidneys and urine; the lymphatic system and skin; and the lungs. Herbs are used to help detoxify different body systems and to prime anti-inflammatory pathways on exposure to organic pollutants and heavy metals (e.g. dental amalgam removal).

Herbs can be available as liquid extracts,, tablets, capsules, teas, lotions, creams or balms. Made by Naturopaths is an emerging brand of natural skin care products formulated by Alexa from Cloud9 Naturopathy, and Lydia from Future Natural Health. Base skin creams and lotions can be converted to a therapeutic product on consultation.

Herbs are considered “natural” but we respect that this does not always mean “safe”. We prescribe herbs for the right condition at the right dose, timing and form, to assist your body to heal. Trained practitioners at Cloud9 Naturopathy will prescribe safely and check for possible interactions between herbs, and between herbs, nutrients and other medications.
